To communicate means to share, give information, or exchange messages. Webster’s Dictionary makes communication sound so simple and, in theory, it should be. Yet when we add attitudes, language, personality types, cultural diversity, emotions, perspectives, upbringing, and intentions, communication becomes far more complex than Webster’s definition.
Those who understand and utilize the principles of communication will always have the advantage. Those who are baffled by its complexity may find it a burden, feel misunderstood or confused, or lack trust.
Some of the challenges in communication are:
Poor listening skills
Not realizing people have different speaking styles
Not having defined the purpose for the communication
Misaligned personal or corporate goals
No common ground to begin the communication
Resistance
Wanting to be right instead of seeking resolution
Not realizing the importance of the communication to others
